0N0 – Cloaked Climax Concealed (Album Review)

The Book of Ecclesiastes would have you believe there is nothing new under the sun, but the author of that book never heard OnO’s new release Cloaked Climax Concealed. When you have to start putting forward slashes in your genre description, it’s probably best to just develop your own word for your style and be done with it.

The Slovakian band has taken the droning ideas of bands like Gojira and turned it up to 11. Pulsating and savagely sludgy, the music is essentially a cacophony of sounds that drone from start to end, featuring elements of many metal genres to create a melting-pot of uniqueness. The haunting clear vocals are contrasted by the powerful death screws that penetrate the mix. The guitar tone buzzes with discontent while the drums provide some sort of structure to an otherwise formless style of music. The result is something bordering on completely original.

Production-wise the area is somewhat uncharted. Up loud the tracks seem to take on too much fuzz, but is that intentional? Is that what they are going for? Sometimes we witness a brave new world, and we’re never sure where it might take us. Closing your eyes and feeling this music is a must.

However, it needs to be said that this sort of music may only work in small amounts, which may be why one two tracks were on offer. Time will tell if a whole album would offer enough exploration and variety to have any sort of lasting power. Suitable for those who don’t get enough from the sound of their buzz-saw bought from Aldi.
