I don’t exercise as much as I wish I did. I mean, I have the intention to, but it just never really seems to happen for me. I always need some motivating factor, a doctor telling me that I need to lose weight, a loved one happy to go out on a run with me or, and in the case of Tzun Tzu’s latest EP release The Forbidden City, a velociraptor with a machine gun placed at my head while I run across a lake of molten lava.
There is really only one word I can use to describe this release: Raw. The voice, sitting in the lower registers is raw.

The guitar playing is frantic and raw, the bass pierces the lower end and is raw and the drums, probably the most amazing part of the release, is, you guessed it, damn raw! There are elements of clean or even melodic sections that give terrific nods to the Eastern focus this band has and gets close to pushing this band into the Australian post-metal genre (which wouldn’t be disappointing to a fan like me).
The production is another thing that is quite raw, and in the past, I can be hard on the production value of a release, but for this release, it suits what they are trying to achieve.

With so many releases being made in bedrooms nowadays, I wonder if Tzun Tzu’s EP release will pave the way for a new ‘lo-fi’ focus for Australian metal. I guess time will tell. Suitable for those who like their steak blue.
